ABOUT US

Scottish Word originally started off as a uni project that tasked us all to produce a niche website. I regularly attended Speakin' Weird and loved the atmosphere and hearing from local creatives. Because of this, I decided that I wanted to portray the creativity I witnessed and write about local spoken word events.

I had to leave the blog untouched while it was being graded and by the time I could post again I was too busy writing my dissertation and working on other uni projects. I have now graduated and have decided to start it up again.

THE SCOTTISH CREATIVE SCENE

Scottish Word is a blog dedicated to writing about the creative scene across Scotland.

Scotland hosts numerous spoken word events, from poetry readings to slam competitions, especially in the larger cities of Aberdeen, Edinburgh, and Glasgow. There has been a resurgence in poetry and spoken word recently, and it reflects Scottish culture and issues faced by contemporary society such as politics, sexism, and racism.

Scottish writing is often described to be at the forefront of literature and steeped in history. Edinburgh was crowned the world's first UNESCO City of Literature in 2004 and is home to the esteemed International Book Festival which is held every year and runs over 900 events over a three week period.

With the rise of independent publishers and online platforms more Scottish writers are arising. Not only do they portray and represent Scottish life, culture, and, identity through their work, they also critique it.

The blog features information and reviews of events in Scotland, samples of work, and, news about the local creative scene.
